Community Theater for Santa Cruz County

Founded in 1985, Actors’ Theatre has established itself as a vital part of the greater Santa Cruz area’s theatre community; known for its productions of classical, contemporary, and new plays, and home base for several highly popular Improv groups. Our intimate 88-seat black box theatre draws artists from around the area to work on our season, or offers a perfect setting upon which other productions can be presented. Our outreach efforts target middle school to college level students to provide opportunities to acquire real-world experience and to practice their craft. We support emerging playwrights from around the country and beyond with possibilities to show their new works.

We are excited to provide a time tested teaching technique for our ballet students. We have closely studied the Russian methodology and analyzed the alignment, and theory of teaching. We have adapted this into a curriculum conducive to today’s American student. This technique develops superior strength in the body while keeping healthy alignment and preventing injuries.

International Academy of Dance is a performance-based studio. We seek to develop student’s artistry by giving them ample stage opportunities. Our productions are always a stimulating mix of classical art from a variety of cultures.

We consider physical, mental and emotional wellness to be of utmost importance to all of our dancers, whether they are three-year-old pre-ballet or 60-year-old salsa students. Our studio offers a comfortable social environment for all students and their parents. All of our instructors are knowledgeable about the history, theory and technique behind the various dance forms. Ballet students receive regular nutritional instruction, encouraging them to develop healthy fortified bodies and strong muscles. It is of paramount import that all students are instructed based on their own talent, body type and personal ambitions. We recognize that while one student may desire a career in classical ballet, another may simply want to feel comfortable in a nightclub. It is with these differences in mind that we seek to develop each students fully desired potential. We look forward to your arrival at IAD. Let us know what type of dancer you would like to be!

In what may be the most entertaining music video homage ever shot in a war zone, a group of American soldiers stationed at a military base in southwest Afghanistan star in a lip-synced version of Lady Gaga's hit "Telephone." The video, which yesterday began to spread online, was filmed recently inside what appears to be a garage at the Forward Operating Base in Farah Province. Posted to YouTube a week ago, the 3:45 production--complete with props, signs, and costumes--features an all-male cast from the 82nd Airborne Division. The video, which can be viewed above, was the brainchild of Aaron Melcher, a married 24-year-old soldier who graduated in 2004 from North Carolina's Gramercy Christian School. Melcher opens the video in a pas de deux, of sorts, with fellow enlistee Justin Baker, who is not nearly as enthusiastic a dancer as the gyrating Melcher, who incorporated elements of the original video's choreography in his desert remake. On the following pages, you'll find video stills of Melcher's co-stars, along with photos of most of the soldiers in their normal work clothes. Melcher, pictured below, can be seen in the video wearing, a la Gaga, a revealing top fashioned out of yellow police tape. The 23-year-old Baker, wearing a belly-bearing shirt, is accessorized with a pink "Drama Queen" sash. Soldier Kenneth Eichler wears short shorts and a pair of oversized yellow shades. Other performers include a shirtless James Conley, telephone-wearing Private First Class Kory Roberts, sign carrier Mike Castor, and Joshua Pilon, whose costume could not be discerned. Contacted last night, Melcher declined to answer questions. The video, he noted, was intended to be for "a couple of our friends and family and you can see that it has blown up way more than that...nobody in the video would like any further media coverage." When he first uploaded "Telephone: The Afghanistan Re-make," Melcher told Facebook friends to "feel free to share it with the world." He added, "it's the hotness." Melcher and several of his fellow soldiers have carefully monitored the spiraling number of views their video has received. On Wednesday, Pilon posted a brief update on his Facebook wall: "5,000 views...I'm going to be Famous!!!" In a post on his Facebook page, Conley wrote of the video, "this is what people do with they free time in Afghanistan. Its crazy out here. And yeah im in it too." The video's cinematographer, Douglas Lake, termed the clip "funny as shit" in a message Wednesday on his Facebook page. Lake added, "i couldnt stop laughin while I recorded it lol."

Enya was born Eithne Ni Bhraonain in Co. Donegal, Ireland. Enya studied classical music at college and under private tuition. On leaving college she was asked by Producer Nicky Ryan to join her siblings in their family band. She did so for a short time, but found it too restrictive musically, and so in 1982 she joined Nicky Ryan and Roma Ryan in a creative and business partnership. Enya's first commission was to write a score for Sir David Puttnam for his film "The Frog Prince". Then, the triumvirate secured the soundtrack to the BBC documentary series 'The Celts'. Enya was then signed up by Warner Music and all three by EMI Music Publishing. The first album of this contract was "Watermark" with the hit single "Orinoco Flow". This was followed by "Shepherd Moons" "The memory of trees" "Paint the sky with Stars" "A day without rain" which produced the single 'Only Time' "Amarantine" and for "Lord of the Rings; the fellowship of the Ring" the songs "Aniron" and "May it be". Enya, Nicky and Roma were nominated for a Golden Globe Award and for an Academy Award for the song "May it be" and have also merited many other nominations and awards, including the Ivor Novello for International Achievement. The latest honours bestowed on Enya were two Honorary Degrees, the University of Galway honoured her with Doctor of Music and the University of Ulster honoured Enya with Doctor of Letters.

There is no other recording artist in the world today quite like Kate Bush. In the course of her twenty-seven year career, since her dramatic arrival at nineteen years of age in 1978 with the hauntingly beautiful and instantly classic 'Wuthering Heights', Bush has built a reputation that remains unrivalled in terms of musical ambition, pioneering sonics, stirring emotional content and sheer originality. The fact that the world has been waiting for the release of her eighth album, 'Aerial', for more than a decade has, if anything, only added to the air of mystique surrounding her.
"I have been genuinely touched by the sense of anticipation I've felt from people," says Bush. "I feel really privileged that people have been waiting."

On the evidence of 'Aerial', her first album since 1993's 'The Red Shoes', it may have been a long wait, but ultimately it has been a very rewarding one. A characteristically bold and expansive work brimming with atmosphere, mystery, passion and complex aural detail, the twin-disc 'Aerial' has already been declared a masterpiece by all who have heard it.

Realising that the amount of material she had accumulated in her time away was unlikely to fit onto a single CD, Bush made the decision to split the results in two, resulting in her first double album. Disc One, entitled 'A Sea Of Honey', comprises seven songs, ranging from the evocative lead-off single 'King Of The Mountain' through to the emotive reading of a lengthy section of the infinite series of numbers in 'p', to the playful, spell-like 'How To Be Invisible' and the moving, impressionistic conclusion 'A Coral Room'. Disc Two, 'A Sky Of Honey', is a conceptual piece in nine parts, built around recurring motifs of light and birdsong, following a day from afternoon through dusk and night and on to sunrise.

"What is quite nice for me doing the two discs," 'Aerial's creator explains, "is it allows me to play with the semi-classical style which I like – space and acoustic music – but also the band-based stuff with lots of drums."

Bush has spent her twelve years out of the public gaze dividing her time between preparing the songs for 'Aerial' and looking after her son, Bertie, born in 1998. "I was having to work in really short little bursts," she says of her prolonged absence, "and I'd never done that before. The way I'd always worked was to just stay in the studio for fourteen hours a day. I didn't have that luxury to use the time in the same way. So there were lots of periods where really nothing much was happening. But in some ways I'd say it was very good for me to have had those kinds of restrictions. It was continually forcing me into a situation where I had to stand back from it."

Brought to the attention of EMI Records at the age of sixteen by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour – as a prolific schoolgirl prodigy with already around two hundred of her own compositions – Kate Bush famously enjoyed a three year period of artistic development before being launched upon an unsuspecting world. Having released two albums in 1978 – 'The Kick Inside' and 'Lionheart' – and staged the mould-breaking theatrics of the Europe-wide 'Tour Of Life' the following year, Kate Bush began to assume control of her music with her co-production of 'Never For Ever' in 1980, yielding three startling, story-compacting singles in the form of 'Breathing', 'Babooshka' and 'Army Dreamers'.

Her next step, into self-production, saw the creation of 'The Dreaming', released in 1982, a year in the making and still hailed by many as her best album, showcasing an almost filmic approach to her recording craft. Three years later followed 'Hounds Of Love', a stunning set of angular, rhythm-driven pop songs – including the strident 'Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)' and the majestic 'Cloudbusting' – backed with the side-long suite 'The Ninth Wave'. In 1989 'The Sensual World' followed (including musical contributions from David Gilmour, Nigel Kennedy and The Trio Bulgarka) and in 1993, 'The Red Shoes', featuring collaborations with Eric Clapton and Prince.

Over the years, Kate Bush has collected two Ivor Novello awards – in 1979 for Outstanding British Lyric ('The Man With The Child In His Eyes') and for Outstanding Contribution To British Music As A Songwriter in 2002 – while in 1987 she scooped Best British Female Artist at the Brits. Appearing at the Q Awards in 2001, she received a spontaneous standing ovation from an audience including former Sex Pistol John Lydon, Brian Eno, Radiohead and Elvis Costello, when accepting the Classic Songwriter gong.

And then, silence, until 'Aerial'. The musicians credit list for Bush's eighth album reveals new collaborations with drummers Steve Sanger and Peter Erskine and percussionist Bosco D'Oliveira, along with more familiar names such as Gary Brooker (founder of Procol Harum, providing Hammond organ), guitarist Dan McIntosh, drummer Stuart Elliott (who has appeared on every one of her albums), bassists Eberhard Weber and John Giblin and recording engineer/bassist Del Palmer. As such, over the years, Bush has gathered around her something resembling a close-knit musical family.

"There was a sense of being at play as well as at work," Bush notes of the sessions for 'Aerial'. "I think that's very important because it is so hard and so frustrating sometimes trying to get an idea to materialise. It's not an easy process. I really like working with people who are old friends, it's lovely."

Poignantly, 'Aerial' also features some of the last work of orchestral arranger Michael Kamen, who had scored for every Bush album since 'Hounds Of Love' and who passed away only weeks after his contributions to the album were completed at Abbey Road studios in October 2003. "What was great about Michael was his stuff was very visual," says Bush. "He did such a fantastic job. It's very hard to believe he's not around any more."

Now, in November 2005, with the release of 'Aerial', Kate Bush is following in the grand tradition of groundbreaking double albums. "I used to really like the double albums I bought of artists that I loved," she states. "It wasn't in a way so directly connected with you spending money on an object. It was somehow more of an artistic statement. It said, 'Here's my music'."

Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950) is an English musician and songwriter who rose to fame as the lead vocalist and flautist of the progressive rock group Genesis. After leaving Genesis, Gabriel went on to a successful solo career. More recently he has focused on producing and promoting world music and pioneering digital distribution methods for music. He has also been involved in various humanitarian efforts. Gabriel was awarded the Polar Music Prize in 2009. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.

TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. The annual conferences in Long Beach and Oxford bring together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).

On TED.com, we make the best talks and performances from TED and partners available to the world, for free. More than 500 TEDTalks are now available, with more added each week. All of the talks feature closed captions in English, and many feature subtitles in various languages. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.

We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we're building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other. This site, launched April 2007, is an ever-evolving work in progress, and you're an important part of it. Have an idea? We want to hear from you.

The TED Conference, held annually in Long Beach, is still the heart of TED. More than a thousand people now attend -- indeed, the event sells out a year in advance -- and the content has expanded to include science, business, the arts and the global issues facing our world. Over four days, 50 speakers each take an 18-minute slot, and there are many shorter pieces of content, including music, performance and comedy. There are no breakout groups. Everyone shares the same experience. It shouldn't work, but it does. It works because all of knowledge is connected. Every so often it makes sense to emerge from the trenches we dig for a living, and ascend to a 30,000-foot view, where we see, to our astonishment, an intricately interconnected whole.

TEDGlobal is TED's twin conference. It was held in Oxford, UK, in 2005, and then in Arusha, Tanzania, in 2007. TEDGlobal is now held annually in Oxford, starting July 2009. The themes of the global conference are slightly more international in nature, but the full TED format is maintained.

TEDActive features a live simulcast of the Long Beach conference, in fabulous Palm Springs, with an emphasis on connection, conversation and creation.

TEDIndia was held in November 2009 in Mysore, India, celebrating and exploring the beckoning future of South Asia.

The TED Prize is designed to leverage the TED Community's exceptional array of talent and resources. It is awarded annually to three exceptional individuals who each receive $100,000 and, much more important, the granting of "One Wish to Change the World." After several months of preparation, they unveil their wish at an award ceremony held during the TED Conference. These wishes have led to collaborative initiatives with far-reaching impact.

TEDTalks began as a simple attempt to share what happens at TED with the world. Under the moniker "ideas worth spreading," talks were released online. They rapidly attracted a global audience in the millions. Indeed, the reaction was so enthusiastic that the entire TED website has been reengineered around TEDTalks, with the goal of giving everyone on-demand access to the world's most inspiring voices.

The TED Open Translation Project brings TEDTalks beyond the English-speaking world by offering subtitles, interactive transcripts and the ability for any talk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. We launched the project with more than 250 translations, 50 languages and 100 volunteer translators. It's an ambitious project (generously supported by our sponsor Nokia) that radically enhances the accessibility of the talks -- for the hearing-impaired, for whose who speak English as a second language, for search engines (which can now index the full transcript of a talk), and of course for the vast audience of non-English speakers worldwide.

Today, TED is therefore best thought of as a global community. It's a community welcoming people from every discipline and culture who have just two things in common: they seek a deeper understanding of the world, and they hope to turn that understanding into a better future for us all.

Project Camelot is based on an idea generated when we first met and spent the weekend in Tintagel, England, overlooking the sea in the home of King Arthur. We named our project in tribute to the vision behind the utopian idea of the Round Table - and have structured all our efforts in this inspiring spirit.

Ever since our launch in 2006 we have been financing Project Camelot solely out of our own pockets and with the generous help of donations from visitors to our site. We thank you sincerely all for your help and support, without which we could not do what we do.

To date, we have traveled widely meeting and interviewing truth-tellers in the effort to provide enlightening testimony about the true nature of our world. We will continue as long as our funds and contributions make this all possible.

It is a nod to the famous MGM Lion... A nod to the power of film (and video) in making manifest the amazing facets of worlds and realities, to display for scrutiny and analysis and wonder what it means to be human.

Camelot interviews are shot in a guerilla style that captures the interpersonal dynamic as well as enables the viewer to determine whether the truth is being told, some facsimile thereof, or a lie.. The camera reveals this in the facial expression, voice, tone and body language of the subject, and gives us added insight into what resonates and what does not. It gives us a candid picture of not only the person but also reveals the more subtle layers underneath. We pick up subliminal cues and as viewers can come to our own conclusions, without being limited or misled by edited sound bytes, canned commentaries or misdirects by the interviewer that interfere with a determination of what is truth and what is fantasy or simply a lie.

Marina Orlova – Not your typical philologist. Etymology, philology, word origins, origin of, hot teacher.

Marina Orlova, known to millions of fans around the world as a sexy master of language, HotForWords, is a 28 year old Internet “sensation”. Hailing from Moscow, Marina has two degrees in philology which is the study of linguistics and origins of words. Back in Russia Marina taught English and World Literature to high-schoolers. She came to the United States six years ago to improve her English skills and prepare for her Ph.D., but she ended up staying in the U.S. simply because of the warmer weather.

Two and a half years ago, Marina burst onto the YouTube scene. Her initial goal was to reach more people with her language knowledge. Instead of a classroom of 20 back in Russia, she now has a virtual class of 324,607 YouTube subscribers. In each video she takes word requests from YouTube users and discusses their meanings and origins. Something that might, at first, seem boring, but when a buxom blonde with a Russian accent teaches you anything, it can be quite educational, thus proving, as her tag-line states, that “Intelligence is Sexy.”
